SUMMER SCHOOL FOR EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP 2009
"AN OVERTURE TO GLOBAL LEADERSHIP"
Summer School for Effective Leadership 2009 (School) is a collaboration between Leadership 21, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and The University of Hong Kong for the second consecutive year with the aims:
- to nurture youth leaders with solid fundamental knowledge and intensive leadership skills,
- to foster all-rounded training to strengthen their critical thinking and reasoning skills, interpersonal skills, cognitive skills and ability to analyse and solve problems,
- to reinforce their willingness to serve the community, and
- to further develop global perspective and promote intercultural awareness amongst the participants.
Characteristics of the Summer School for Effective Leadership
Well-rounded and Intensive Campus Life Experiences
The uniqueness of the School is to give participants the opportunity to learn fundamental leadership skills, where self-motivation and independent learning will be heavily emphasised. Residing in dormitories at The University of Hong Kong also provides participants with a unique chance of experiencing an independent and responsible way of living through:
- Dialogue Sessions with Distinguished HKU Alumni
- Dining Etiquette Workshop
- Traditional High Table Dinner
- Campus and Hall Tour
Meeting the Community Leaders
Community leaders will be invited by the School to share their valuable experiences with participants and inspire them to be responsible global citizens who will concern and contribute to the development of society.
Developing Practical Skills
The School will focus on developing participants' practical leadership skills, including leading a team, public speaking and chairing a meeting. Workshops, adventure-based and team-building exercises and a Community Involvement Project will be part of the requirements.
Building Broader Perspectives
The School aims at raising social consciousness among the participants. They will learn how to identify and discern needs, and will also learn how to contribute through their engagement in service. In addition, the course will also help them understand the relations between many world and local issues and thus increase their global awareness and concerns.

HKD $8,000* (FULL BOARD AND LODGING at The University of Hong Kong included.)
Summer School for Effective Leadership Grant and Scholarship
Youth leaders from F.3 to F.7 (2008-2009) are cordially invited to apply for the following Grant and Scholarship:
- Under the Grant Scheme, participants in financial need, by nomination from school teachers , may apply for partial or full fee waiver. Special consideration will be given
to recipients of the following schemes:
- School Textbook Assistance Scheme recipient or,
- Senior Secondary Fee Remission Scheme recipient or,
- Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipient.
The Scholarship Scheme is run by the HKFYG. Under the scheme, outstanding students meeting the following criteria are welcome to apply by nomination from school teachers:
- Excellent academic achievements at HKCEE, or equivalent or,
- Demonstrated excellent leadership in territory-wide leadership organizations or,
- Have represented Hong Kong and received award(s) in regional or international competition.
Successful nominees may receive a scholarship of up to $8,000 to cover the fees of the Summer School.
Each school may nominate a maximum of 2 students for the Grant and 2 students for the Scholarship.
Awards and Certificates
Upon fulfillment of all the course requirements, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Completion issued jointly by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and The University of Hong Kong.
